r/Place Returns Teaser

Motion case study

r/place is a collaborative digital canvas on which a single redditor can only place a single tile every five minutes.

I led the motion design for several key elements of r/Place, including the UX motion, return teaser, and internal tech review video.

Return Teaser

I was responsible for the art direction, storyboarding, and animation of the teaser video. I delivered three social media exports optimized for different platforms: 4:5 (Instagram feed), 9:16 (Instagram Story/Reels), and 720x1280 (Twitter). The teaser zooms out from a pixelated canvas, revealing the self-aware phrase "r/Place was better" before displaying the date 4.1, signaling r/Place's return after 5 years. The teaser received 46.2k upvotes on Reddit.

UX Motion

I created multiple versions of spinners that integrated the r/Place logo and pixel theme, enhancing the visual interaction and user experience.

Tech Review Video

I shot and edited the internal deep dive into the technical innovations behind r/Place. The video was met with widespread acclaim for its clarity and production quality.

Review

In this year’s 87-hour run of the project, Redditors from 236 countries and territories contributed 160+ million tiles-adding all kinds of art, memes, and memorable moments. Though it was only a four-day event, r/place was the #16 most-viewed subreddit, and the most upvoted post in all of 2022. Here’s a look at some of the numbers that reflect Reddit’s awesome community:

Place total canvas views: 157+ million

Total redditors who placed a tile: 10.4+ million

Height of r/place activity: 5.9+ million tiles placed per hour
